Changes to the department structures in the RZ since June 2023

As of June, some personnel and structural changes have come into effect in the data center, which we would like to inform you about.

New "Central Infrastructure" department

With Frank Wolter taking up his duties as department head on 1.6.2023, the "Central Infrastructure" department has started its work.

The focus of the department is on providing modern, functional and secure workplaces for the entire university. The department will combine the responsibilities of the previous departments "Institute Support" and "Administrative IT".

As an internal service provider, we will offer a catalog of standardized services. These offerings will focus on Windows-based workstations and server systems, among other things.
Other offerings include the provision of software distribution, a model for delegated administration of workstations and user groups, and an anti-malware solution, as well as taking over the e-mail service for central administration (Exchange server).

In addition, the "Central Infrastructure" department will also assume technical responsibility for the introduction of the university-wide document management system.

In addition to exploiting synergies by merging the departments, the service for the institutes will also be expanded through the creation of new positions (see IT partial position model).

New focus of the "Information Systems" department

In addition to the establishment of the new "Central Infrastructure" department, a second area is being reorganized: In the "Information Systems" department, headed by Dr. Randolph Welte, the two focal areas of Web and Identity Management (IDM) will be thematically recombined.

In the Web area, the focus is on the central Web service infrastructure and its support. This includes, among other things, the content management system currently in use, Zope/Plone, and its designated successor, Wordpress. In addition, an Apache web server farm is operated.

The project "Webrelaunch of the University of Freiburg" requires the provision and support of new technical infrastructures. This also includes the migration of existing content from the existing system as well as the integration of new functionalities. The technical responsibility for this lies with the department.

The area of IDM / IAM will be another focus of the department. As part of an "IAM project", the aging myAccount IDM system is to be replaced as soon as possible. In this context, the project also includes questions of connection to an AAI (Authentication and Authorization Infrastructure) / LDAP as well as developments currently in focus, such as 2-factor authentication (Keycloak).
