New master agreement for SPSS

The University of Freiburg will again participate in the new master agreement between the University of Tübingen and IBM. The new licenses should be available from July onwards. The current licenses expire on June 30th, but can still be used until July 31st .

Constructional release in Werthmannstraße 4 granted

The necessary renovation work on the sound insulation ceiling has been carried out and the rooms have been handed over to normal use. However, the current regulations still apply here. Currently, only limited forms of use such as examinations or distributed computing are possible.

bwLehrpool - door signs and information boards (Update)

[Update] The functionality behind the bwLehrpool info screens can be used not only for door signs but also to search for currently free computer pool slots.

Remote bwLehrpool as alternative access during pool closure

The remote bwLehrpool access as an alternative solution will be expanded step by step. Faculties planning to have access to their pools in this way, should simply contact the bwLehrpool team. A password-protected virtual room will then be created.

Storage system for research data management at University IT Services in procurement

For the storage system bwSFS, which was applied for and put out to tender together with the NEMO communities, the contract could now be awarded. Various participants responsbile for data archiving and publication needs at the University of Freiburg in close cooperation with the colleagues at the University of Tübingen were involved.

bwLehrpool: Biology pool rooms converted to University Pool Concept

The computer pools of the Biology II Institute, Schänzlestraße, have been adapted to the University Pool Concept. This includes the boot selection server, a separate network and, of course, the teaching and training pool.

Remote bwLehrpool - extended prototype and live tests

After extensive tests and evaluations, the basic module of Remote bwLehrpool was stable enough to be used in practice. Some course organizers were already curious to test it, and it works so far. However, there were also some challenges.

After the malfunction of the bwCloud over the weekend, affected virtual machines (VMs) and data carriers (volumes) have been restored.

Adobe Connect licenses currently fully utilized

As already communicated on several occasions, the University of Freiburg has obtained a license for a maximum of 200 simultaneous users for Adobe Connect. This limit is currently reached, as a result please switch to the below mentioned alternatives.

bwLehrpool: Help for corona drug development

Due to the current circumstances, a large part of the existing pool computers are not being used. In order to utilize this potential for the benefit of the general public, the bwLehrpool team, at the suggestion of a physics student, is carrying out calculations for the folding@home project on currently idle pool computers. These are not overlapping with the "bwLehrpool Remote" offer.

The data center has received a commercial video conferencing solution (Webex from the company Cisco) for a test phase of 80 days, from which most of the university's employees can benefit.

Rules for Conduct for Usage of University Resources through VPN

Due to an increase in home office activity, there are capacity bottlenecks when using VPN. For example, the home directory (file server) is not accessible and oftentimes the connection is simply slower.

Pools and computer rooms closed

Since all university courses and exams are cancelled, the computer rooms in KG2 and in the computer center will be closed from Monday, March 16 2020 until April 14, 2020.

Limited user service consultation as of March 16, 2020

Due to the rapid spread of the coronavirus, the user service is switching to a phone- and email-based consultation service. This allows us to reduce the risk of infection.

Werthmannstrasse 4 pool rooms closed

On the afternoon of February 17, the Stabstelle Bau und Entwicklung informed us that the pool rooms on the ground floor and the first floor were not open for use, effective immediately. The reason was/is "faulty execution of the hanging ceiling and possible danger of falling ceiling plates".

bwCloud: Completion of maintenance and expansion cycle

Today, we successfully completed the maintenance and expansion cycle of the bwCloud SCOPE. The supply of GPU resources is now possible.

Employees and students can now acquire SPSS licenses for 2020 through the Asknet shop.

bwCloud reminder: downtime for hardware maintenance on December 12

As a reminder: On December 12, the bwCloud SCOPE at the Freiburg location will be unavailable throughout the entire day. During the downtime, we will implement new computer nodes and do maintenance work on the basic software. We cannot predict yet how long the server will offline.
