Instructions for move to bwCloud space in Self-Service

The bwCloud team has made some step by step instructions available for the move to the new bwCloud, in the Self-Service. Machines that are not moved automatically before the switch-off of the old cloud will be shut down.

By now, all current users should have received an information email regarding the upcoming shut-down of the old space (end of Sept. 2018) and how they can register for the new bwCloud service. There are instructions for the self-service during the move on the bwCloud pages.

There are basically two ways to move data from the old bwCloud to the bwCloud SCOPE space: the "rsync" and the "Snapshot" method. With the "rsync" method, the user data is copied from one instance of the old bwCloud onto a running instance of the new bwCloud space. With the "Snapshot" method the running instances are saved from the old bwCloud into a huge file which is then copied into the new bwCloud space. The instance then lies in the new bwCloud space as a private image, which can be started. The latter method should thus be avoided.

Generally speaking, the bwCloud is similar to the commercial equivalents: there is no warranty for availability and against data loss (as well as loss of the complete VM). For this, automatic set-up and deploy methods should be preferred. As well as measures for regular backups when there is no automatic redeployment.
