New access to mailserver

Access to the university email service CommuniGate Pro is being changed. The computer center is restructuring the email system in order to prioritize availability and stability despite increasing access and data rates and email volumes

Reaons for the change

The email server is being restructured into a cluster that is built on  redundancy and distributed hardware. The new unified server wide access is connected to a loadbalancing system that allocates user connections to the components of the cluster.

The allocation takes into account the utilization of the components and monitors the status of the server so that it can alert the network group immediately in case of impending failure.

By migrating to a unified server  domain names are being vacated that have formerly been used for webmail access and mail clients. Therefore the name server conflicts between normal websites and cms portals are being solved. At the beginning, when CommuniGate was introduced, domain namens have almost always started with www. Today this is no longer the case and many websites start without www. This will now also be possible on our webserver without restriction.

This also takes into account the recommendation given by the BSI that every web site, with or without www, can be encrypted with HTTPS.  Therefore the authenticity of university websites is guaranteed.

New members of the university benefit because there is a profile in the background that provides email clients automatically with the necessary settings. Servername and ports don't have to be configured manually anymore.

New Server Name

All CommuniGate email accounts now use the server name mail.uni-freiburg.de, both webmail (https://mail.uni-freiburg.de) and for email clients like Thunderbird, Outlook, Apple Mail or else.

The email address in itself remains unchanged. It is just given an additional role: it becomes the login that has to be entered in webmail or the email client.

Members of the computer center login to https://mail.uni-freiburg.de with for example max.musterfrau@rz.uni-freiburg.de. Members of the English department login to https://mail.uni-freiburg.de with jeannette.doe@anglistik.uni-freiburg.de.

This is also valid for email clients. In addition to mail.uni-freiburg.de as the server name the user name is the complete email address. Please also see our FAQ:

Starting from august all maildomains will be migrated step by step, in close cooperation with the local computer admins in the institutes.

Users are being informed via the mailing lists and alerted by CommuniGate itself. Webmail sites that have already migrated are being redirected to this web site.
