Performance expectation - HISinOne (12 to 19 October 2015)

We are unfortunately expecting problematic system performance of HISinOne on the following dates: Monday (12 October) - Wednesday (14 October, 4pm): very poor; Wednesday (14 October, 6.30pm) - Monday 19 October, 3am): slightly better (due to hardware extensions); Monday (19 October, 6am) - Friday (23 October, 4pm): extremely poor (regardless of hardware extensions and due to the start of term); Saturday (24 October) - Wednesday (18 November, 12.30pm): normal but slow; from Wednesday (18 November, 8pm (envisaged date)): noticeably improved at critical points with positive effects on the overall performance (due to HISinOne 7.0)

Due to the increased use of HISinOne, the system performance has deteriorated. Below we provide information about how we try to improve the situation and about what you yourself can do.

Which steps are taken by the system producer HIS eG to improve the situation?

  • With the new version 7.0, which has been provided for universities several days ago, the system producer has achieved improved performance in several places. Preparations for launching the new version at Freiburg University are currently being made.
  • Simultaneously, the system producer has multiplied the hardware requirements for the system by four (this also goes for previous versions).

Which steps are taken by the university's IT Services?

  • During the maintenance break on Wednesday (14 October, from 4pm onwards), the load-balancing between servers will be reconfigurated and hardware resources will temporarily be doubled for two weeks.
  • On the basis of the new requirements and experiences with reconfiguration, we are working on a new hardware concept.
  • Parallelly, we continue to feed back performance problems to the system producer to allow for the software to be corrected accordingly.
  • We are intensely working on switching to version 7.0 (details here:  https://wiki.uni-freiburg.de/campusmanagement/doku.php?id=faq:hisinone7_0)

Which steps can you yourself take to improve the situation?

  • Students should access information on courses through the study planning function, the course search, and their personal timetable, or examination registrations. Navigating the tree structure is particularly heavy on system resources.
  • Employees should access information on courses via the course search, the function for designing curricula, room bookings, or "my courses".
  • Faculties and institutions should ensure that content for the course catalogue is ready and entered ahead of time. The date for the winter term is July and the date for the summer term is January.
